Kyohak Publishing Co., was ordered to revise its history textbooks describing the April 3rd Incident, or the Jeju Massacre. The Ministry of Education reported that eight history textbooks authorized by the National Institute of Korean History were reviewed and 788 out of 829 were approved.

The points of contention in the remaining 41 cases include North Korea’s land reform (Kumsung Publishing Co., Ltd.), the Cheonan sinking (Doosandonga Co.), atrocities committed during teh Korean War (Mirae-n Co.), suspension of North-South talks (Visang Edu Inc.), the Dokdo dispute (Jihaksa Publishing Co., Ltd.), human rights in North Korea (Chunjae Educaion Inc.), and anti-Japanese actions in colonial Korea (Kyohak Publishing Co.).

In a statement the Ministry of Education said: “Kyohak needs to revise the Jeju April 3rd Incident, reflecting the purpose of Jeju 4.3 Special Law.”

The Ministry of Education reported that once they receive the modifications they will hold council again. The approved textbooks will be shown online before publishing so schools can select and order them easily.
